Hill
Country Suffolks has been in existence fsince
1975 and began when Rodney Yates' older daughter purchased
30 head of Suffolk/Hamp Kansas State ewe lambs. A Mortimer
ram was purchased and Pennie began her 4 H flock. With
the help of then,County Agent John Menzies, a small
number of Mysterik ewes were also purchased.
A
partnership was formed in 1973 with the initial purpose in mind of
raising Champions for the 3 Yates children. The
Hill Country flock grew from 125 head of ewes to over 900 ewes by 1990.
About
the time major stock shows started slick shearing show lambs
and breeding sheep, Hill Country went to the top; because
of their structure, muscle, and thin hide. The George Anise
bloodlines out of Canada was a major contributing factor
in achieving these characteristics.
In
the early 80's Hill County purchased a Clifford Graff flock
out of Adams, Nebraska, in which the total foundation flock
was Anise bloodlines. During this same period of time for
approximately 8 to 10 years the joint venture projects between
the Bob Fields Family and Hill Country Suffolks gave the
Suffolk industry a totally new look.
In
1990 a long lasting partnership was dissolved and the Yates
Family decided to go a different direction. Over the next
6 years, piece by piece, concentrating on structure and correctness,
full wide loins and level hips the Hampshire influence helped
the puzzle begin to take shape. Today, with the help of a
group of great feeders and friends, we have a winning combination.
Our
goal now is to continue to produce not only Champions in
the junior show ring, but also to raise some of the better
breeding stock available today.
We recently purchased this new ranch approximately 8 miles off of 1H 10 West
out of Comfort ,with all new facilities. We almost have everything completed.
